Experts in specific aspects of
product safety may be called in to
- Help designers and manufacturers of consumer products or work
equipment identify, understand and comply with the safety regulations
and standards that apply to the products they make.
- Analyse hazards and draw up internal safety specifications for
products outside the scope of published standards (eg innovative product
concepts)
- Conduct ergonomics analyses to identify possible hazards from
foreseeable consumer (mis)use, misconception, error or lapse of
attention
- Draft or evaluate user instructions and safety information required
on packaging and in catalogues
- Advise on type-approval and certification requirements required by
law or by major customers.
- Conduct or manage research to develop effective and practical safety
measures
- Advise on systems of sampling and quality control of safety-critical
issues of production batches
- Prescribe modifications to correct safety defects that come to light
in products after sale to consumers.
- Train staff to set up and maintain product safety files, that may be
needed to demonstrate due diligence to major customers, trading
standards authorities or a court
- Establish monitoring of safety complaints, escalation criteria and
contingency plans for recall action
- Advise retailers, importers and 'brand owners' who distribute
consumer products on diligence practice when relying on information or
assurances given by suppliers
- Help exporters identify and meet consumer safety laws and standards
in markets they want to expand into.
- Assist public liability insurers with risk rating, premium
discrimination and incentives for risk reduction
- Perform hazard analyses for companies using consumer products in the
workplace or in consumer services
- Write briefings for journalists, public relations, trade associations
or consumer pressure groups
- Prepare discussion documents and draft proposals for government and
standards bodies considering revising safety requirements
